Short History of PEPIAT

South East Asia Muslim Students Federation (PEPIAT) was formed around 1970 by three student organizations which involved National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students (PKPIM), Indonesian Muslim Students Association (PII), and Assembly of Indonesian Muslim Students (HMI). Before the establishment of PEPIAT, student leaders from Malaysia and Indonesia kept visiting each other and shared their same visions and missions commonly to develop Muslim communities in South East Asia particularly among young generations.

Later, upon that, they agreed to form a coalition of student NGOs in South East Asia which was called PEMIAT. Among student figures which had contributed to the formation of PEMIAT were Anwar Ibrahim, Nurcholis Majid, Siddiq Fadzil, and Hussein Umar . Unfortunately, due to several of political problems in the region, PEMIAT was no longer becoming an active federation. However, PEMIAT was revived in 1988 during the period of Mustaffa Kamil Ayub when the name of the organization was changed to PEPIAT and it remains until today.

Currently, PEPIAT comprises of around 8 NGOs which consist of several student movements from South East Asia country such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Myanmar, and Philippines.
